Letter from David Newton, Director

December 22, 2007

Happy Holidays Everyone,

For those of you who don’t already know, the 9th annual (can you believe it?) Peter’s FUNd Racer will be held again at Sugarbush on March 7th and 8th. With all the early snow this year, I’m sure the lodging is filling up quickly, so make your arrangements now if you plan on joining us in March.

Let me get you caught up on our fund raising to date. After eight years, we have donated:

1. $10,000 to Dr. Caroline Kim’s melanoma research at Beth Israel Hospital
2. $10,000 to The Hope Lodge in Boston
3. $15,500 to the Sugarbush Ski Patrol
4. $40,000 to the Vermont Respite House
5. $50,000 to The Hope Lodge in Burlington, VT
6. $150,000 to ‘Peter’s Garden’ at Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington, VT, and
7. over $400,000 for melanoma research at The Mass. General Hospital here in Boston.

Not bad for just a bunch of fun-loving friends and family members.

Under the heading, “It’s not always about just writing the check,” let me share one little story about Peter’s FUNd Racer and our friends, the Beebes. As you can see from the numbers above, last year we raised $60k for The American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge projects. We learned that getting treatment for cancer involves so much more than simply showing up to take your very harsh medicine. The entire process is often a severe financial strain, a logistical nightmare, and causes great emotional stress on the patient’s entire family. We learned that often patients will forego treatment because it is just not possible to get to the hospital, sometimes in another state, for treatment that can require several hours a day, several days a week.

Enter Scott, Laura, Eliza and Caleb. The Beebes were so moved by what a Hope Lodge can mean to a family, they opened their home and their hearts to two different families over the summer. One family was from Minnesota and their little girl was being treated at Children’s Hospital. The other family was from Rhode Island and the Dad was being treated at Mass. General. I’m proud of the Beebes, and all of us, who have been able to accomplish some very good things through Peter’s FUNd Racer over the past eight years.

Please send a copy of this email to any fun-loving friend who might like to join us on the slopes, and on the dance floor, in March. As a reminder, our website is www.petersfundracer.com and you can find lots of information on lodging at www.sugarbush.com. Let me know if you have any questions.

Have a safe, wonderful holiday season with your families and as the lyrics go in my favorite song from The Holiday Pops, “Let there be peace on earth.”
