Letter from David Newton, Director
November 4, 2005
I hope this annual letter finds you and your family healthy and happy. It has been a very exciting and productive year at Peter’s FUNd Racer so let me try to bring you up to date.
On March 12th we held our sixth annual event. I am very aware of the fact that these charity events have a certain life to them. Every year I wonder if this will be the year that the event begins to lose steam. Then the weekend arrives and I see close to 100 racers, lots of new, very happy faces with big smiles, and many, many good friends. The excitement level at our Saturday night party seemed higher than ever.
The whole weekend was a blast. Please check out the pictures on the website. You can also go to pfr.smugmug.com to print your own pictures or order them directly for a very nominal charge.
We raised close to $80,000 again from our fantastic raffle for an all expenses paid trip to Spring Creek Resort in Jackson Hole, our incredible auction, and from a bunch of friends who believe in our mission and just want to contribute.
We also had a very funny thing happen on the way home from Fenway Park on Patriots Day. If you haven’t done so already, make sure you click on the link in the upper right hand corner of our home page to read an article from The Boston Globe pertaining to the day’s events. Suffice it to say that thanks to some very fun, very generous friends, we raised an additional $100,000 for Peter’s FUNd Racer.
After lots of careful consideration and conversations with our board members, we decided to contribute the $100k to Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington, Vermont where Peter received the majority of his treatment. During those treatments, Peter took on the responsibility of making everyone around him feel just a little bit better about what they were facing, together. We decided the money would be best spent on the brand new Healing Garden for cancer patients to be located in a new interior courtyard where patients can rest and reflect. With Lynn’s professional help and our contribution, I know the garden will be very therapeutic, peaceful and beautiful.
This puts our event-to-date totals at $11,500 for the Sugarbush Ski Patrol; $30,000 for the Vermont Respite House; $100,000 for Fletcher Allen Hospital; and just over $400,000 for the Melanoma Research Fund at MGH. Wow! Thank you.
This winter’s event will be held February 24th and 25th. Make your plans and your room reservations early because that is the 2nd weekend of a vacation week for a lot of people. There is currently plenty of availability for rooms and condos but they will go fast.
Thanks again for your interest and your support. I hope to see you on the slopes in February.
